There comes a time in every journey when you reach a major fork in the road—a juncture where two completely different paths diverge in front of you. Sometimes the choice is obvious, but sometimes you’re forced to choose between two amazing opportunities, both of which will challenge and inspire you. In those rare instances, how do you possibly choose? Flip a coin? Consult the Magic 8 Ball?
Perhaps you just go with your gut.
We’ve spent an incredible year and half cruising the beautiful and diverse west coast of Canada, the U.S., Mexico, El Salvador and Costa Rica. And now that we’ve arrived in Panama, we hope to keep exploring for a few months before we’re locked into a decision on what to do next. That is:
Do we transit the Panama Canal and enjoy the gin-clear water, sandy beaches and laid-back lifestyle of the Caribbean?
--OR--
Do we “puddle jump” across the vast Pacific Ocean and explore the remote, tropical islands and atolls of fabled Polynesia?
Well, we’ve given the decision tons of thought, and right our gut is saying we should cross the Pacific! But just for good measure, I asked the Magic 8 Ball, too. It responded “Yes,” so I guess that settles it.
The Caribbean is undeniably beautiful and cruiser-friendly, but we can’t shake the feeling that we want more. We want to cruise somewhere remote and unspoiled, somewhere slightly outside our comfort zone, somewhere that virtually every sailor dreams of going—the South Pacific. Besides, Aaron’s had Red Stripe in Jamaica, and now he wants to drink Hinano in French Polynesia.
Of course we must include the caveat that everything about cruising is, by its very definition, written in sand at low tide. Until we actually set sail westward, anything could change. But that doesn’t mean we can’t start dreaming and planning and getting ready for 25–35 days at sea (and countless days in paradise), right?
Hey I remember that table, only when I saw (year and a half ago)it was clean not even a beer on it. What a long way it has come and gone.I am glad you finally made up your minds, I expect many pictures, if you find the enet.
ReplyDeleteI don't know I am still locked into mexico, what a ride that would be. Tuning up the Gold Wing and renewing the passport!
Love you guys have fun and be careful.
Let me know when you start the journy then I'll really get giddy. Did I spell that right?
You know, you're right! We sure have come a long way (physically and mentally!). Now we're poised to go even further, and if feels great!
DeleteWe'll definitely keep you posted! And yes, you spelled "giddy" right. :)
Love,
Nicole and Aaron
That pile of flags makes me so happy! Excellent choice. Let us know if you need any info. The first passage was the best 24 days of sailing we've had!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Victoria! After slogging down the coast, we're really looking forward to doing some trade wind sailing!
DeleteIf you don't mind, we'd love to hit you up with a few questions. I can't believe you've sailed all the way across the Pacific! So impressive.
Best wishes for lots of fun in Australia. I'll be in touch (thanks again).
-Nicole
Sheesh... We still haven't made up our minds... Glad you guys are going for it, who knows we may cross bows sooner than we thought! :)
ReplyDeleteWe would so love to see the Nyon crew again! Keep us posted as you get closer to reaching a decision. :)
DeleteCongratulations on your decision, though it doesn't sound like it was really all *that* tough to make.
ReplyDeleteWill you be making your way via the Galapagos Islands? Make sure you can post to the blog via SSB (text only of course) so we can still read of your adventure during the crossing. Also be sure to double check on the SPOT coverage down there. Several years ago they did not have complete coverage and a family back at home freaked out when the boat they were following suddenly stopped posting daily positions - all was well, but the boat had sailed out of the coverage area and did not even know it!!!
Thanks!! We do plan to head to the Galapagos first--I'm actually researching our options for doing just that right now. It's harder than you might think...
DeleteWell, with the SPOT's dead zone, we'll have to figure out another way to update our position (and get it to show on the blog). Great, another item on the to-do list! :)
How's Syrah? Miss you guys!
Nicole
The South Pacific sounds perfect. Happy adventuring!!
ReplyDeleteIt does, doesn't it? Thanks a bunch!
DeleteHope holiday preparations are going well for you! It's hard to get in the Christmas spirit here, but I'm trying. :)
For what it is worth, we chose to cross the Pacific, and kept going actually. Now, 50,000 miles later we made it to the Caribbean. The water isn't any clearer and while cruiser friendly it is, there are certainly a lot of boats here; it's crowded. So we think you are making the right choice.
ReplyDeleteAnd Judy still says that the Pacific crossing was the best.
Fred & Judy, SV Wings, Grenada
Hello, Wings!
DeleteWe are so glad to hear you say that. Coming from such experienced cruisers as yourselves, it carries a lot of weight. Thanks for chiming in! And to Judy's point about the Pacific crossing being the best, I'm still a bit anxious, but what an adventure! Can't wait to get those trade winds in our sails.

That is just plain AWESOME you two!! We are so looking forward to those blog posts. If you need any help with the galapagos, you might consider talking to Terry and Heidi on SV Cetus. They just left there after I believe staying nearly a month on the island.

Thanks so much, guys! We get more and more excited every day! Finding reliable information on the Galapagos is challenging, though, and the more word-of-mouth reports we can find the better. Thanks for the SV Cetus tip!
DeleteHappy holidays!
YAYBIE!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for the Bella Star + Estrellita reunion tour! (I just did a little happy jig in my seat.)
DeleteCan anyone understand this decision besides people who have to make it?! It sounds so simple but you eloquently put it into words. Can't wait to meet up with Bella Star in the South Pacific!
ReplyDelete~b
What a nice thing to say--thanks! To be honest, meeting up with the crew of Osprey in the South Pacific was one of the deciding factors. ;-) Miss you both! See you soon!
