Lightning update: Christmas in July!

Ho! Ho! Ho!  Santa arrived this morning (in a flatbed golf cart) and delivered our first shipment of replacement gear.  Woohoooo!  This feels like PROGRESS!

We used a freight shipper based in Miami to handle the logistics.  They received all our assorted packages, bundled them up, shipped them to Costa Rica, got them through customs and drove them to the marina (a 5-hour drive).  How long did all this take, you ask?  Well, the shipment left Miami Tuesday night and was on our front doorstep this morning at 7:45 a.m.  It’s Thursday.  Holy geez, that’s fast!

Just like Christmas morning – minus the tree and tinsel.  And snow.

The first project – the top priority item that trumped all others – has already been checked off the list.  Yep, the new stereo is installed and cranking out the tunes.  Now the real work begins… :)

  1. Good news! Hopefully it all goes back together rather quickly and with as little hassle/setback as possible. Best of luck so you can get back to cruising and so I can get back to living vicariously through your travels.

  2. I love the big Amazon smiley logo right there in the middle of your packages. :)

  3. Looks good! How long do you think it will take to get everything installed? Will you be making some dinero from the insurance company by doing it yourself?

    1. How long will it take? Good question! We're figuring a solid month to get the bulk of it done. But you know how time works with boat projects! Everything seems to take twice as long as you think it will. :) We may need to pull the mast to re-run the cables for the VHF, wind instrument and lights if we can't do it here at the dock... ugh.

And doing the work ourselves is only saving the insurance company money, not putting any into our pockets. :)

    1. Thanks, ladies! While I'm certainly not glad this whole thing happened, the new gear IS quite shiny and fancy. :) It's amazing how fast companies come out with new models -- I mean, we just installed all new gear a couple of years ago, and now it looks dated and old in comparison!

      Hope all is well!

  6. I am very glad to see the items strating to arrive. Now you can get back to work and see how the other 95% of us feel. Just kidding, did you say the first shippment? That implies more is on the way, maybe you better hustle to get the first in. Will Zack be helping or has he started his voyage? Nicole looks like she is having fun unwrapping everything. Hey, Nicole would be a better helper I know she can gettttter done. I am extremely happy for you guys because I am waiting to see more countries like Panama and Cuba!
    Have fun and be safe

    1. Oh, believe us when we say that this kind of "work" sure beats working behind a desk all day! :)

And you're right, this is just the first of probably two or three shipments (but this one was the biggest and covers most of the high-priority stuff). Zack is off on his fabulous journey to French Polynesia (via Isla del Cocos and the Galapagos), so unfortunately we can't put him to work!

      Love,
      Nicole

  8. I like the comment above "Now you can get back to work and see how the other 95% of us feel.", especially if "work" is working on the boat installing equipment (as I have been this week). Good luck.

So, would you give a "thumbs up" on your insurance company? (Could be helpful info for those of us considering offshore insurance.)

  9. Well, so far we'd give our insurance company, Pantaenius, a thumbs up -- they got a surveyor down here super fast and have been great to deal with. But we're withholding final judgement until the money is in the bank! :) We spent a long time researching offshore insurance providers before choosing Pantaenius, so I'll be sure to give a full review when this is all said and done.

    Okay, back to work!
