Squirrel Cove

By Nicole

Kalamata olives
Wheat germ
Yogurt
Coffee creamer  (hazelnut)
Pears
Lettuce
Bell peppers
Finely chopped walnuts
Sourdough bread
Chai tea
Beer (cheap and canned)

A random grocery list to be sure.  But at the little Squirrel Cove General Store on Cortes Island in Desolation Sound, I was (surprisingly) able to check everything off my list – and it didn’t cost a fortune.  Well, Aaron’s PBR was $8.36 for a 6-pack, but pricey booze is the norm up here.  The power was out when we arrived, so we borrowed a flashlight to peruse the produce in the walk-in cooler.

As we move north, we don’t expect to find many more places like this!  I guess that means we’ll be digging into the Dinty Moore stew and canned chili pretty soon.

We’re off to check out Teakerne Arm and Cassel Falls today.  If we’re lucky, we’ll get the spot right next to the waterfall…

  1. Just wanted to let you know that we're both enjoying reading your posts. It's neat seeing pictures of the Desolation Sound mountains covered with snow...there isn't much snow when we've been there in Aug/Sept.

  2. If you get tucked in to the water fall take tons of pictures. We did not have the nerve to anchor there. We also did not have enough lines to run four lines to the cliffs. But another boat came in and did it after we declined.

  3. Still hoping to find you at Octopus Islands! We had two light wind nights at Cassel, lovely. Roscoe was really fantastic as well.

  4. Hey guys!
I am really enjoying the posts, and as I've said before, I'm extremely jealous!
Have a great time, and we'll be watching your blog!

  5. Richard and Brian - yeah, for the most part it's still pretty cold up here. We've gotten really lucky with some weather, but there's been plenty of cold rain.

CB - Next time you go to the falls just head straight for them. Once the water is pouring over the bowsprit hit full throttle and maintain your course. There's a cave back there that you can drive right into!

Livia and Carol - It was great seeing you guys! I hope to get the chance to go fishing with Carol again. I can't believe that 80 pounder got away!

Glen & Abby - you wouldn't be jealous of me having to dive into the frigid water today to cut our dinghy towing bridle free of the prop.
